Cancellieri Shows Glimpses of Genius in Silver Lining for Struggling Lazio

The mood at the Stadio Olimpico was far from happy on Saturday afternoon. Lazio were trailing against Torino, an opponent that had let in 10 goals while managing only two goals in their previous five league matches. Supporters from the Curva Nord were wrapping up their latest protest in a continuous dispute with club owner Claudio Lotito.

This Year's Efforts Falling Apart?

Was Lazio's season unraveling, or had there never been a thread holding it together in the first place? They reappointed Maurizio Sarri to lead the team this summer, only for him to later acknowledge that the management had omitted to inform him about the transfer ban they were facing for financial irregularities. Reports that he could resign were not true, but he did say that Lotito had "deceived" him.

The Roman club appeared equally disorganized on the pitch as behind the scenes, beating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but losing their other first five games, including the Rome derby. At any given moment, it has been hard to ascertain if progress is being made or collapsing.

The Youngster's Unforeseen Return

A single player kept smiling through it. Matteo Cancellieri wasn't originally meant to feature for Lazio this season. He was on the previous campaign with Parma on loan and, at the start of the off-season, Lazio were advocating for him to extend his stay temporarily. The transfer ban led to a change of plans. Lazio could not afford to weaken their team without replacements.

Cancellieri arrived originally during Sarri's previous tenure, back then just 20 years old graduate of Verona's academy. He recorded 20 Serie A appearances with the club in the 2022-23 season, the vast majority of those as a substitute. The club's longtime sporting director, Igli Tare, whose tenure ended after that campaign, later stated Sarri of "informing all Cancellieri was destined for stardom but then not selecting him."

Uncovering His Natural Fit

Perhaps the manager was still trying to determine the specific characteristics of the player's talent. Labeled as an attacking winger upon signing, Cancellieri yet was deployed for most of that campaign as an unconvincing alternative to Ciro Immobile in the striker role. During 63 outings during spells with Empoli and Parma over the last two seasons, he scored seven times. Shoehorn
