Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside France's air force in a combined operation against an underground arms cache in Syria operated by the Islamic State group (IS), as stated by the British defence ministry.

The site, located using surveillance, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was positioned in mountains just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets used Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a number of approach shafts providing entry to the site... early reports indicate the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the attack conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft made a safe return, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed jihadist rule over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This action shows British leadership, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to eradicate any re-emergence of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," UK Defence Secretary John Healey stated.

UK warplanes have carried out overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of IS subsequent to its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of British forces who took part in this strike for their professionalism and their bravery," he commented. "They were part of numerous British personnel deployed over the holidays. This mission, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who endanger our security, shows how British military are ready to step up, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure within its borders and influential overseas."

During December, the United States armed forces carried out what it termed a "massive strike" on IS targets in the country, after an attack claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. reports Islamic State still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Iraq and Syria.
