Elite Athletes Appeal on Iran to Prevent Death Sentence of Boxing Champion
More than 20 Olympic champions, coaches and other global sports figures have signed a statement urging a halt to the death penalty of a boxing titleholder and instructor, who is facing execution in the country.
Increasing Global Anger
Amidst growing worldwide anger over the country's expanding employment of executions as a tool of suppression, the strongly worded statement denounces the government's decision to uphold the capital punishment of the boxing champion.
Vafaei Sani, 30, from the city in the northeastern region, was taken into custody for participating in national uprisings in 2019 and charged of backing an dissident organization. He has passed 60 months in incarceration, where he has been tortured and kept in isolation.
“Athletics is designed to encourage optimism, togetherness, and courage,” the signatories stated. “The capital punishment of a champion for his opinions is a clear violation on these ideals and a caution to all sportspeople who attempts to express dissent.
Record of Executing Athletes
The appeal noted that Vafaei Sani’s circumstances was not unique and emphasized Iran’s past of putting to death athletes for their views, for example a national team leader, skipper of the soccer squad, and a volleyball captain, captain of the women's volleyball squad.
