During an inauguration day in office, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “reinvent” America's largest city, ushering in “a different age” and an ambitious start to his administration.

A Groundbreaking Leader

The young democratic socialist, who was a relatively obscure state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first Muslim mayor. He also made history by being the inaugural to be sworn in using the Qur'an.

“A time such as this comes rarely and rarer still is it that the citizens whose grasp the controls for transformation,” Mamdani remarked.

An Ambitious Policy Agenda

Mamdani now undertakes one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a platform promising:

• Universal childcare
• No-cost bus transit
• A cap on rents for about 1 million households
• A trial program of city-run grocery stores

The projected $10 billion price tag of these initiatives may prove difficult to fund. Mamdani has vowed to increase levies for the city's top earners and big business. However, as a city subject to the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Facing External Challenges

The new mayor also faces concern from some Jewish New Yorkers concerned about his past stances regarding Israel. Sensitivities were revealed during the transition when a appointments director stepped down over controversial past social media posts.

Mamdani has attempted to ease these tensions by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, avoiding the appearance of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “socialist” and threatened withholding federal funding. Despite this, a recent encounter between the two was described as surprisingly cordial.

The Fundamental Challenges of Leadership

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his administration's public safety record, citing record low numbers of homicides and shootings in 2025, with murders recorded.

As his work starts, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Queens apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a quirky warning about a reputed resident spirit in the home, which reportedly only troubles those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his speech with a simple statement: “The work has only just begun.”
