Wimbledon Adopts Video Replay Technology This Season.

The Championships tennis court with replay system

Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in utilizing replay systems.

Replay systems are set to arrive at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Athletes will gain the option to challenge particular calls from the official, mirroring the practice currently in use at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

This innovation is slated for use on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This development follows just a year after the AELTC introduced ELC, which terminated the 147-year role of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can request the official to review other decisions, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot touched an opponent's racquet or person during play.
  • Possible interference end of a point.

Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the number of reviews a competitor can ask for.

A Recent Example

A recent example occurred in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a tough call for the official, but believed his opponent had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire watched a replay and determined the player was guilty of hindrance, awarding the point to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

This technology are not exclusive to major tournaments. It was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have the system implemented at all of its events.

Other Changes

A further change at Wimbledon 2025 will be the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where fans have sometimes been uncertain whether a shot was in or out.

Finally, with exactly a century of days to go until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have further announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
